Pink Taco & Tutu's

I had such a wonderful day today. I woke up this morning and had a long chat with my mommy. Then I cleaned the house up a bit and noticed that there was a huge bike race going on downtown. I dragged Tray out of bed to go over and check it out with me. These men on top of a car were giving out free t-shirts and I got one :). It was such a beautiful day out today.
Samantha came to get me and we were stuck in massive traffic. Then we got super lost trying to get to David's Bridal where Samantha was molested by our scary consultant. We then thought it would be logical to drive across LA to Century City where we had lunch at Pink Taco which was really delicious. Somewhere along the way we decided that it would be only too logical to make rediculously large tutu's so we stopped at a fabric store on the way to Samantha's house to get massive amounts of tulle. And we really picked the right place because they had at least a hundred different colors and styles, including glitter. Samantha decided to go with a teal theme while I went for a classic peach with a few glitter bits mixed in. As the whole purpose of our day was to do homework we decided that making tutus would be our reward for doing homework and headed back to Samantha's house to start working. I was extremely excited because it was the first house I'd ever been to in Los Angeles, and it was completely adorable.
After a printer fiasco which resulted in a quick run to Kinko's, we decided we'd done enough homework and could start cranking out the tutu's. We also decided that we were jewellry designers and needed to wear pink tape measurers as head peices. I didn't have one so, naturally, we stopped at CVS to pick one up, where Samantha decided to hula-hoop. Obviously 10 yards of tool is just not enough to make a tutu so mine is only about half done. I did, however, come home and do some intense bedazzling of a shirt collar so that I could use it as a necklace. Amazingly, almost no homework was accomplished today. Surprise, surprise. I love being around people who just do whatever they want to just because it sounds fun. Makes me very happy :)

Personal style & Thrifting

I had a fabulous day today with these lovely ladies!! Please excuse my hair. I did not plan on running into a surprise carnival. I met up with Mallory and her sister Marisa today to go thrifting in North Hollywood. I had to ride the subway to get there, which I hadn't done (in LA) since the night when my friends and I had a near death experience with a psycho man wearing zip tie jewelry. But I did it, all by myself, and I survived and nothing creepy happened! The first thrift store we hit was an amazing Good Will, which is where we got most of our stuff and spent the most time. I'll post pictures of my finds below. For some reason this GW only had two fitting rooms and one of them didn't have a working light fixture, which made for some really interesting and intense try-on sesh's. We then headed to a vintage dress store which had the most adorable dresses on the planet. I only allowed myself to try one on because it was on sale and a rediculously accurate pageant-y barbie dress which I can't resist even though I know I could almost never wear it in public. I didn't buy it, but I documented it which is good enough. Marisa got the cutest dress ever. We went to a few more stores and picked up a few things, including some Disney classics on VHS before stopping for lunch at a nice little place. After food we decided to hit one more thrift store that was a little bit farther away. We drove for a while until we noticed on the horizon what appeared to be a ferris wheel. As we got closer we realized that it was a ferris wheel, along with a few other rides and what appeared to be a carnival. Not being the type to pass up a good-old-fashioned carnival we took a slight detour. After deciding that the rides were not appealing to us we hunted for some delicious treats and found ourselves getting sucked into a 3 dollar photoshoot (props included). Eventually we also got treats, yum. The final thrift store was kind of a bust, but Mallory got a flannel she had been wanting. Then we went back to Mallory and Marisas' to re-try on all of our new swag and hang out. Mallory made pancakes that were SO GOOD. And then I rode the subway home all by myself. <3
When I got home I got into a discussion about trends with my roommate, who has very different opinions than me on a lot of things and is very set in her ways and her views, which I respect. But it got me thinking about things. I see personal style as something that is created by things that we see everyday, just like personality and character is shaped by happenings in your life. Even if there are places that you go to look for inspirations for your style, there are still places that you pick up inspriation and style that you don't even realize you got it from. I might see someone in passing wearing combat boots and then be obsessed with the idea of combat boots for weeks and not really know why. Because I wasn't necessarily paying attention to what I saw but I saw it. And that doesn't mean that I am copying someone, because I would take combat boots and fit them into my own personal style. Lately I think about this a lot because I have a class entirely based on trends and the process of trends. My roommate and her two best friends have very distinct personal styles and they are all very different from my personal style. But lately I've noticed bits of their styles rubbing off on me. Example, each of the last few times I've seen Angie, I've thought she looked SO cute, and then the next day I'll be inspired to get this metal collar necklace or these high wasted shorts. And then it occurred to me that I want them because Angie was wearing them and she looked really cute. But then I felt lame for wanting them because I would be "copying" Angie. But that thought still didn't stop me from wanting them, because I knew they would be just as cute on me, she just gave me the idea. And that's how trends work. Angie got the idea from somewhere or something else. Even if you thought you made it up, you probably didn't really, you were inspired by something to do whatever you did and that's fine. Because that's how it works. That's how art, life, style, that's how they work. You take something from someone, someone takes something from you, they give it to someone else. Fashion is a cycle, style is a progression, inspiration comes from all around you. If you're not wearing the exact same outfit I wore yesterday, you're not copying. It's nice to try on someone else's shoes every once in a while.

This is me being frustrated because I don't have anything to say or post. I spent two days doing nothing but homework and watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Today I had class, I got full points for my project and did some serious damage to our set because I am amazing. I also sent my whole group home so that I could work on it alone. And told my teacher to stop trying to tell me what to do because I know what I'm doing and I don't need to re-draw out my plan again on big paper.. especially since I already have almost all of my peices already made. People here irritate me. If my end result is just as good (ahem way better) than everyone elses anyway that why do I have to go through all of your monkey hoops to get there? I don't. Thanks.
Now I'm reminiscing about elementary school, middle school, gel pens, and myspace with my roommate and her best friend. I think tomorrow I'm actually going out in public so I might be interesting again, and might actually put effort into getting dressed so that I can post beautiful pictures for everyone. Okay bye.

I didn't do anything interesting today. All I did was my materials&props project. We were supposed to create a play on words using the molds that we created in class. Basically you take an an object, cover it in a substance that then hardens, then you take the oringinal object out, the hardened stuff you put on the outside contains a negative of the object, you poor a different substance into the shell of the hard stuff, the stuff dries, you take the hard shell off, and you have a duplicate of the original object. I molded potatoes, among other things but for this project, potatoes. Why potatoes? Because, being the star pupil that I am, I figured out what my project was going to be prior to our mold making classes. The best part of my project however, is the couch. I'm in love with it. And the fact that it only took me maybe 20 minutes to figure out. I'm very pleased because I think that my instructor will be pleased with me and I seek to please him because I love him. I briefly left the apartment today to go to the store and then facetimed my entire household. Sadly, I started the last season of Buffy today. wah. bye.

Today has been a good day, especially good because I woke up feeling like it could go either way and it ended up being good. I spent my morning.. drafting? Wow, that actually sounds less good. Oh well. Then I decided to try something on my hair to make the pink stop fading out. I've been trying not to wash it as much but it's already washed out so much that it's like gross orangey blonde. So I took the dye and mixed it in with my shampoo and conditioner, which worked really well actually. Like a little color refresh. Then I actually had to go to drafting class. Which actually wasn't so bad because Samantha and I just hang out and try to survive the class. Sketching was fun, it always is because Mallory, Samantha and I have a good time ignoring the instructor and doing whatever we want, including scooting two drafting tables together so that all three of us can sit together, and leaving class for god knows how long to talk to my fourteen year old sister. Mallory wants to go swing dancing on Monday so badly. I'm pretty excited about it, it's definitely going to be an.. experience. We went back to my place to work on some moves after class. Thank you YouTube. I put together a pretty sick wrist ensemble today. Had some good talks. Got some nice feedback. Feeling good :) <3<3

Obsessed.

Twist-Knot Headband Tutorial

Hey all. Lately several people have asked me where I've gotten my turban-esque, twist-knot head bands, which are not head bands at all! They are actually just scarves that I tie a certain way to look like one. I originally saw this on Pinterest but I figured I would put together my own little tutorial for fun. Hope this helps! :)

1. Use a scarf that is long enough to wrap around your head twice. First center the scarf on the back of your head so that the two ends are equal and in front of you

2. Cross the two ends, one over the other in front of your head

3. Pull the cross tight against your forehead

4. Cross the two ends, one over the over. Take the bottom side and twist it all the way around the other side in a wind-mill like motion

5. After the twist, both sides should end up back in the place where they started, but the twisted knot in the front will be formed.

6. Take the ends around to the back and tie them in a knot, I like to tuck the loose end peices into the wrap to make it look more like a head band.

Voila!

Hola. I am so tired of Drafting! Which sucks for me because I have to finish the page I'm working on and do a whole other one before class tomorrow.. and then I have to do it in class for 3 hours. It's not even that it's hard it's just so annoying and tedious.
Yesterday I went to the Grove with a new friend. Now that I've been in LA for a few months, I'm finally starting to sync into my own pattern and be comfortable enough to make friends and go out and do things. And it's about time! Four months of pent up Katherine is a lot to handle, so thank you, Hannah, for not changing your mind about me after I talked your ear off yesterday. I never realized how much I apparently like to hear myself talk. Really though, I was just so glad to have someone non-judgemental who would actually listen to me. I love my roommate and her friends, but, I just don't really fit with them. This is a realization I've come to recently, which just makes me even more ecstatic to have a friend who is like me! Anyway, Hannah wanted to go to the Grove to apply for jobs (brave Hannah for trying to work and go to FIDM at the same time) and I was on the hunt for shorts. Which I found, yay! Along with two crop tops <3<3<3, a ring, and a cute bracelet to go with my watch! All from Forever 21. And proud of it.
I was so excited for today because I could finally wear some of my new stuff from this weekend since I had class. I'd been plotting to wear my neon wedges, which are so so so comfortable thank god because I wore them to a mall. Yes, my trends class was held in a mall today. The most pointless class of all time became even more pointless. Thank god I had two more friends to share today with. Samantha and I had quite the adventure in the Apple store attempting to get her iPhone replaced for whatever reason, during which time it was revealed that she actually has two currently active iPhones. Just because. We also had big lol's because my digital camera's LED screen wasn't working and I thought for a moment that I might have to look through the lense *gasp*. The funniest part of that is that it's funny at all. The dude in the Apple store who helped us was named Darlington. That's kind of a sick name. I wondered what his parents were like.
Home now. Swamped with drafting. Watching Charlie's Angels and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Helping my Indian roommate, Prakriti, try on my pink wig for laughs. Emailing potential housemates for next quarter (including one from Australia, fingers crossed!!). Looking forward to tomorrow with Samantha and Mallory. Enjoy these images of my life.
